What is Gum Disease?

Watch this video by Dr. Bianca Esparza where she explains symptoms of periodontal disease and they can be treated.

Gum disease is a very silent disease. Many times with gum disease, there’s a lot of bleeding, there’ll be some mobility of the teeth, but many times there’s no pain. So when it comes to the dentist, if you don’t have pain, a lot of patients don’t come in. But with gum disease, when we do our assessment, we see what that big problem is.

Gum disease includes inflammation of the gums, as well as destruction of the bone that’s holding your teeth under the gums, which is why we have to do what’s called a deep cleaning in addition to other gum treatment. We deep clean those areas that are damaged to get all of that debris and bacteria out so we can make sure that those areas close and lessen the bleeding, then allowing you to maintain it at home.
