In dentistry, almost everything is a process. That makes sense when it comes to creating lasting results, but we also understand that managing appointments can be tough. For many people, fitting one visit into a busy schedule is hard enough. Having to come back for follow-up care can feel like a hassle. So when patients ask, “Can I get a dental crown in one day?” we’re pleased to say yes. With CEREC technology, we can scan, design, and place a custom ceramic crown during the same visit. There’s no need for a temporary crown or a second trip to the office. Just reliable care that fits your life.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown looks like a natural tooth and is shaped like one, too. But instead of growing from the gums, it comes in the form of a cap. We use a crown to cover and protect a tooth weakened by decay, injury, or dental work. Think of it like a helmet on a football player. Football isn’t a gentle sport. Players get hit, and their heads need solid protection. In the same way, when your tooth has been through a lot, a crown keeps it safe and supported.
Crowns are also used to complete dental implants. If you’re missing a tooth or need one removed, we can place a small implant directly into your jawbone. This implant replaces the tooth root, providing a stable foundation. Once the area has healed, we attach a crown on top. It fills the gap and blends in with the rest of your smile, giving you the appearance and function of a natural tooth.
Can I Get a Dental Crown Done in One Day?
In many dental offices, getting a crown takes two visits over several weeks. First, the dentist examines and prepares the tooth, takes impressions, and places a temporary crown. Then, a dental lab makes the permanent crown, and you return for the final placement. But with advanced digital tools, we can often complete the process in just one appointment.
Using CEREC technology, we scan your tooth digitally (no impression trays required) and design a custom ceramic crown right here in the office. The system then mills the crown while you wait, and we bond it into place the same day. This allows you to leave with a fully restored tooth without needing a temporary crown or a second appointment.
When it comes to dental implants, however, the timeline can look different. If a tooth needs to be extracted, we may recommend waiting before placing the implant. Giving the bone and gum tissue time to heal helps create a more stable foundation for the implant. Once the area is ready, we can move forward confidently, knowing the final result will be strong, secure, and long-lasting.
How Long Does a Crown Last?
With proper care, a dental crown typically lasts 10 to 15 years. In many cases, it can remain in good shape even longer. Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular dental checkups, help protect both the crown and the natural tooth beneath it. Still, certain factors can affect how long a crown will last.
One of the most common concerns is plaque buildup near the edge of the crown, where it meets your natural tooth. If plaque sits in that area too long, it can lead to decay under the crown or cause gum disease. Either issue can weaken the crown’s foundation and shorten its lifespan. Saliva normally helps wash away plaque, sugars, and acids, and it plays a key role in protecting your mouth from bacteria.
When saliva flow is reduced, though, plaque and acids tend to stay in place longer. This increases the risk of “recurrent decay” at the crown margin. Certain medications, including those for heart disease and high blood pressure, often cause dry mouth as a side effect. If you take any of these, it’s important to let your dentist know so they can help you manage the risks and protect your dental work for years to come.
